80th anniversary of D-Day

A day of resonance international

June 6, 1944 remains etched in history as the day when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, marking a decisive turning point in the Second World War. To commemorate this historic event and pay tribute to the thousands of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for freedom, La Manche is once again hosting commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The Normandy beaches, once the scene of one of the most important military operations of all time, will be the focal point of these commemorations. Veterans, their families and international dignitaries will gather to pay tribute to their fallen comrades. The solemn ceremonies are a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who took part in this historic operation.

Now more than ever,

we owe it to ourselves to celebrate the memory of what happened here, and the values of peace, freedom and reconciliation that are so dear to Normandy.

Hervé Morin, President of the Normandy Region

Events large-scale cultural events

The commemorations will culminate on June 6 on the very beaches where Allied troops landed just eighty years ago. Military parades, wreath-laying and speeches will mark this memorable day. Veterans will have the opportunity to pay their respects at the monuments erected in honor of their fallen comrades, while spectators will express their gratitude and respect. In addition to the official ceremonies, numerous cultural and educational events will be held throughout the region. Exhibitions, conferences and film screenings will give the public a better understanding of the scale and historical importance of the Normandy landings, and of the Manche region in particular.

Our département boasts numerous sites linked to D-Day, including Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Église, Azeville and Carentan. Not to mention the many blockhouses dotting our coastline, a former German defensive line and an almost impassable obstacle for the Allied forces. What’s more, the English Channel was the scene of bloody confrontations and targeted bombing raids, particularly on the towns of Cherbourg and Saint-Lô, which were almost completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War.

Numerous D-Day-related events will be taking place in La Manche. You can find a list of these events here, as well as the full updated program on 80e-normandie.fr or on the D-Day Live smartphone app.
