a must-have in the bay landscape

La Ferme des Cara-Meuh ! is a family-run business that has been passionately perpetuating its dairy farm in Vains since 1929. Since 2013, the farm has opened its doors to the public, followed by educational tours, sales exhibitions and festivals. Over the years, the farm has reinvented itself and diversified to become a must-see site in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. We invite you to discover this farm, where ethics, organic produce and craftsmanship combine to offer you products emblematic of the Manche region and an authentic experience.

The route educational

As soon as we arrive, we set off on the educational trail that leads us to meet the farm’s animals.

We discover the Bayeux pigs. The educational panel explains that this Norman species – so cute with its big ears that hide its eyes – almost became extinct following the Normandy landings. We then move to the back of the shed, where we watch the calves of the year suckling at the automatic milk dispenser. The sucking noises and their eagerness to feed make us think that this milk must be delicious!

The rest of the tour takes us to see the cows in the field. These ladies are very lucky: they have an incredible view of the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel from their pasture. But we were also lucky enough to discover species that are rarer for a farm, such as fallow deer and peacocks, who cohabit in harmony in their large enclosure with a donkey, geese and a billy goat. There’s a little game in front of the park: can you recognize them?

The tour ends at the Cara-Poule site. In 2017, the farm welcomed laying hens in a mobile henhouse: an old bus set up in an open field. This ingenious system enables the hens to follow the cows in the meadows. They disperse the dung and help fertilize the soil. This keeps the plots clean and encourages grass growth. Clever!

Milking, tour highlight

The highlight of the visit was watching the cows being milked. This takes place every day from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. The glass wall of the milking parlour allows us to observe what’s going on in real time, in complete transparency, as close as possible to the cows.

At the Cara-Meuh farm, this beautiful, hot, frothy milk is then transformed into cheeses, butter, crème crue, faisselle, fromage frais, Italian-style ice cream… Not forgetting their famous caramels! The caramel-making workshop is also equipped with a glass window, allowing us to observe this gourmet process at close quarters.

The milk museum and the temporary exhibition

We climb to the floor dedicated to the Milk Museum, where, comfortably seated on old barrels, children are captivated by a video offering a glimpse of life on the farm. As we wander through the aisles, we’re also transported back in time by a collection of farming tools that evoke images from the past, immersing us in the nostalgia of farm life in days gone by.

While the kids are entertained by the documentary, we enjoy the temporary exhibition featuring paintings by a local artist. This ephemeral cultural offering is renewed every month, promising a unique experience with every visit.

Leaving the showroom, we make our way down to the boutique, where a multitude of dairy products await us. We choose cheeses with funny names like “La Meuhle” and “Comfiné” for our evening cheese platter, churned butter and honey from the farm for our breakfast, not forgetting fresh eggs and many, many tins of caramels.

But the store doesn’t limit itself to dairy products, it also offers a selection of local produce from other local farms, diversifying its offer with cider, terrines, apple juices, beers, and many other wonders. A veritable Ali Baba’s cave for lovers of local produce!
