Can you introduce yourself and explain your background?
My name is Angélique Chéreil. Following my studies in product design, I took a course to deepen my knowledge of the techniques involved in the ceramics trade. Over a 15-month period, I deepened my knowledge in this field and obtained two CAPs (ceramic throwing and decoration). Thanks to the combination of my skills in design and ceramics, I developed a range of products whose guiding principle was to highlight the plastic and technical characteristics of clay. A few weeks after completing my training, I set up shop in the crafts district of Villedieu-les-Poêles, at 20 rue Carnot.
What does your job involve?
I’m a designer ceramist. I design and create objects in clay. Stoneware, to be precise, is fired twice and glazed to solidify it and make it suitable for everyday use. I make cups, bowls, teapots, pitchers, boxes, vases and many other types of objects…
What techniques do you use?
All the pieces I make are turned, and most are decorated with clays I collect from nature. I also make my own glazes, some with clay and/or wood ash.
What are your signature creations?
I offer both utilitarian and ornamental pieces. The espresso cup, with its little foot that raises it, is one of my flagship pieces. This piece allows me to explore enamel research, including ash and clay enamels. It is closely followed by the goblet, which is fairly representative of my work. It comes in several models and finds its uniqueness in the textured clay band at its base. For the decorative pieces, it’s the molten clay and cloisonne decoration on vases of varied shapes, always geometric, that stands out.
